A privilege

The Livestrong Challenge is less than a week away. Time to gather names to carry on my jersey over the 90-mile passage through “Hill Country” east of Austin. If you aren’t coming down for the event, but want to honor a cancer survivor or the memory of a loved one lost to cancer, please DM their name(s) to @bikecrave, post them in comments section on this page — or email me at bikecrave(at)gmail.com. Tomorrow, I grab a big Sharpie and ask my daughters to help me start “customizing” a jersey that aims to help pay tribute to great people who have been affected by this disease. I hope we beat it. It’s a privilege to ride on behalf of them. Here goes. Please add. Please honor. Please help give greater meaning to what this fight is all about: humanity. I’ll write a blog post for Friday before heading to Austin, and include photos of the jersey. Livestrong.

Jeff, I have another one for you to add… meet Kenji Kawaguchi, a boy that has valiantly waged war against Neuroblastoma, which is an absolutely beyond dreadful form of pediatric cancer. His last scans show him clear, so we here at Team Will join with his family in celebration of the success of his treatment. Read his story at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kenjikawaguchi, and I’m confident the inspiration of this kiddo will add some serious fuel to your legs!

Jeff, thank you for doing this. I lost aunts, grandmothers and both my parents to cancer – damn thing does not discriminate. Would you include Petra & Charles Skerlecz on your jersey? #livestrong

Hi Jon, incredible story of a boy’s courage. I’m inspired and moved. Kenji will be on my mind.

Martha, I hear you on the lack of discrimination. And I honor the memories of Petra and Charles. Thank you for giving me the privilege of sharing with other riders.

Hi Jeff,

Please add friend/composer Chris Hewitt to the jersey. We lost a great talent to colon cancer 1-1/2 years ago.

Thanks for all you do!

Okay…. more names if you have the space. Olene Chard ( my Mom and a breast cancer survivor), Lou Mckenzie (mother-in-law passed away from pancreatic cancer ’04), Al McKenzie (father-in-law passed away from melanoma ’97), Shelby Keiper (Team-Will Child Hero passed away from Astrocytoma ’08). Cori Buckley (young family friend that passed away from lung cancer ’03). This is a difficult reminder of how prevalent cancer has been in our lives. Jeff, thanks for doing what you’re doing and may your tribe increase!!!
