Bike friends

Bike friends. They’re invaluable. You may not always realize it. But without them, you’re a single rider, exposed to the elements and all the road can bring, both good and bad. Bike friends can make a ride at least twice as good as you thought possible — no matter the route or weather conditions. They can make you laugh. They can make you cry when the humor gets so good it turns to slap-happiness. During times of pedaling silence, the communication among Bike friends can be more powerful than words. A nod of the head. The gesture of a hand. The perfect line chosen on a sketchy descent. Each act says something unique. I was fortunate to ride Saturday morning with Bike friends in San Diego. During the 4+ hours, I made mental notes to write down here. Bike friends:

  1. Share the work
  2. Point out danger
  3. Lend you tools
  4. Provide mechanical support worthy of any pro team
  5. Plan rides that give absolute enjoyment
  6. Hand you a dollar bill for a ”boot” when tire sidewalls fail
  7. Encourage you to do your best
  8. Tell great Jens jokes
  9. Buy you a cup of fantastic coffee
  10. Listen, teach — and always find ways to inspire each other

Bike friends. There’s nothing else like them. These are the people who may have been strangers a month ago, but today seem like a brother, a sister, or part of an extended family. That’s because in all likelihood, they are. Bike friends make up a global Bike family, one that has its own nuances, codes and edicts. And local Bike families are those with whom you most closely bond. Bike friends. I can’t thank you enough. But I’ll keep trying.

If I could say one thing today, it’s this: Be sure to thank your Bike friends, wherever they are, whenever you ride again next. You can never have too many Bike friends, or be one enough times to others. I swear to you. Bike friends. They’re invaluable.

  2. Bike Path KOM WARNING: This post is about one of the stranger characters in the cycling world. I’ll call him Bike Path KOM. You know. The guy riding alone who lights it up on a 2% rise that goes…, oh about 100 meters. King of the Mountain! If you’re fortunate, you’ve never met...
  3. The ride’s the thing: Why I bike This post originally appeared in the blog, 30 Days of Biking, on April 1. I’m popping it up on BC in its entirety for posterity’s sake. Also because I’m lazy today. Why do I ride? That’s like asking me why I breathe. Riding a bike is part of who I...
  4. Bike vs. office It’s really not a fair fight. The bike triumphs on so many levels: physical invigoration, sun, wind, rain, chill, warmth, mobility, endorphins. The office, however, is a critical fact of life: income, eating, mortgage, intellectual rigor, retirement and college savings, quarterly earnings to the Street, innovation, technology, growth. I’d be lying...
  5. Have travel, will bike Working on something that has been near and dear to my heart for the better part of a decade. Of course, it involves bikes. But much more. High-tech, you ask? Yes, if you count carbon, DA-10 or Campy 11-speed. Web 2.0? Absolutely. Tweetable? Yep. But at its core, the concept...

We moved house almost exactly a year ago.

Don’t tell anyone, but the thing I miss most about our previous neighbourhood, after living there for 16 years, is my bike friends. Thankfully we still get to catch up from time to time.

Well said.

Hi Jeff, Wish I could have made the ride last Saturday. Unfortunately, my work and family commitments don’t give me the opportunity to get out for many long rides with my Bike Friends. Our ride up Palomar earlier in the year is one of my all time favorite cycling experiences and I look forward to sharing the road with you again in the near future. Best of luck on your new adventures up north.

Absolutely!

It’s amazing what one ride can do. You are a great bike friend Jeff, looking forward to our next ride, whenever it may be.

My pleasure. Sometimes I find that a post can be an evergreen. Blooms each spring.
