Click. The unmistakable, beautiful sound.
It’s the helmet buckled before you roll out. It’s the marriage of cleat and pedal as you decide to accelerate from 0 mph to any mph. It’s the first shift up to push a bigger gear. It’s the necessary shift down to spin (or survive) with an easier gear. Click is the little-ring-to-big-ring announcement of greater effort. It’s also the big-ring-to-little-ring decision of higher cadence.
Click.
It’s an audible sensation of cycling. Click accompanies us on every ride. Click can comfort you when you connect frame pump to valve stem and bring a flat tire to life. Click is the photo you take to memorialize what you witnessed on the road or trail. Atop the mountain. In the desert. Amid the pines. Along the stream, lake or ocean. From somewhere inside your heart.
Click.
If you listen closely, click signals the moment when all is right. Air flows over your skin just so. The sun casts a perfect light. The wind turns to friend from perceived foe. Click is forward motion and progress. It’s a rare glimpse into what some people will never see, feel or know.
Click. The unmistakable, beautiful sound.

- Friday was my day Friday was my day. At 4 p.m., I aimed the bike west toward a winter’s setting sun. The air was cool. Not cold. The sky was blue. Not gray. The canyons were dressed in a green that reminded me of Scotland. The ocean shined in the distance. Hot air balloons...

- Fixated on London I’ve ridden a fixed-gear track bike. Once. It was, shall we say, challenging. My antsy college legs were not ready. Nor was my brain. More than a few years later, everything suddenly feels fixie. I’m not sure how long the craze can go on, but it sure is fun to...
- Borrego Double Ordeal At precisely 166.3 miles and 12,500 feet of climbing, I came to understand why the Borrego Double Ordeal is named as such. Six miles shy the historic mining town of Julian, California at 4,000 feet elevation — outside of San Diego — I had a huge cramp. In my brain....

Well said. A pleasure to read.
Before this post I’ve associated “click” with an annoying noise coming from my bottom bracket… weeks later discovering it’s origin actually from the seat post.
What a brilliant damn post. I read it twice. Beauty.
Many thanks for the comment! Hope all is well in MN! BC
