Here are the latest numbers year-to-date:

5,318 miles

375,146 feet climbed

Not sure what the fall season has in store (other than the Austin Livestrong Challenge and The Borrego Double Ordeal), but looking forward to the path on which I’m pedaling. End of summer in San Diego means a few things. Fewer tourists on the coast by the ocean. Fewer cars. Shorter days. The need for more focus on what can be accomplished during daylight. Consider: There’s indoor must-dos. And then there’s outdoor want-to-dos. Balancing both ends of the spectrum makes for a nice list of grateful-to-be-able-to-dos.

Hope your first week of September goes well, and your rides and training take you where you want to be.

  1. The human race Today’s official. For the next few months, we no longer “save” daylight in what has been a great cycling year. For some, things transition to the indoor trainer or spin class. For others, saddle time will be limited to weekends and holidays away from the office, quarterly earnings and EBITDA....
  2. Daylight The sun. I swear it felt warmer today. It stayed in the sky longer before sundown. If I wasn’t mistaken, today was March 6, not January 6. Or maybe it was April 6? No kidding, for real, amazing kind of day. I worked a 20-miler in at lunch. The best...
  3. Falling for fall As a native son of San Diego, I admit we’re blessed with weather here. Yes, we also may be a little less “hearty” because we don’t have to rake piles of leaves or shovel snow. But we still have seasons. I swear. Really. Trust me. Some of the leaves will...
  4. The art of waving I crossed paths with more than 100 bicycles today. The Southern California coastline is a weekend magnet for riders of all ages, abilities and aspirations. The bikes I saw shared many things in common. The obvious: two wheels, handlebars, saddles, pedals. And the human: Lots of riders with blank faces....
  5. Less is more Ran the numbers tonight. Not bad. YTD mileage is nearly identical to 2009 — a tad under 3,000 miles, or closing in on 5,000 kilometers (counting missed mileage from Mt. Laguna Cycling Classic, Death Valley Double, Borrego Double Ordeal and a few in-town shorties). But one major change in the...
