As a native son of San Diego, I admit we’re blessed with weather here. Yes, we also may be a little less “hearty” because we don’t have to rake piles of leaves or shovel snow. But we still have seasons. I swear. Really. Trust me. Some of the leaves will turn (December). Snow will cover the ground ( in the local mountains above 4,000 feet around January). Ah heck, the thermometer will flirt with 32 F in “town” before year’s end (at 4 a.m. on a single day in a canyon 20 miles east of the ocean). It happens.
The best way to experience weather in San Diego is on a bike. We really have two seasons: sunny and sunnier. A San Diego cyclist with thousands of miles in his or her legs can detect the difference between 104 degrees and say “just” 100 (for your Arizona and Florida folks). They know when humidity is 30 percent or 15 percent. They can appreciate the arc of the sun as the earth tilts us toward the winter solstice and darker, longer nights. They understand the thickening dawn fog of September as summer begins its long goodbye.
Falling for fall takes practice. In the middle of the day, ride like it’s a summer day. In the morning or late afternoon, bring a few extras. Wind vest. Check. Arm warmers. Check. Smile. Double check — no matter what the time of day.

- Odometer and alitimeter True fact: I’ve put more miles on my bikes this year than my car. It’s been awhile since I did the math. The numbers keep going in the right direction. A direction that humbles me, makes me thankful that I can be out there, and creates happiness. About 99 percent of...
- Handmade in Italy Oh, how I wish I lived in the snow (for a few days, anyway). And by “snow,” I mean East. If I did, I’d be at this show pronto, on Feb. 26. The makers of my first rig of choice (Moots) will be there, as well as many other bike...
- New roads Riding the same routes too many times can turn any chance for exploration into the routine. If you’ve memorized the number of traffic signals on your favorite loop, it’s time to rethink “the program.” Roads less traveled are the perfect elixir for cycling rejuvenation. Do you need new paths, training...
- The road to satisfaction When you pedal in wet and cold conditions and refuse to surrender, there’s a quiet satisfaction. Saturday was one of those rare days in San Diego. The forecast was catastrophic by local standards. Precisely what was needed for a Palomar Mountain group ride planned weeks ago. The official 70% to...
- Less is more Ran the numbers tonight. Not bad. YTD mileage is nearly identical to 2009 — a tad under 3,000 miles, or closing in on 5,000 kilometers (counting missed mileage from Mt. Laguna Cycling Classic, Death Valley Double, Borrego Double Ordeal and a few in-town shorties). But one major change in the...
