It goes without saying that today in the U.S. is one heckuva day of gratitude. There will be hugs. Smiles. Sighs. And maybe a few tears. Forget rush hour on the freeway. Or horns honking. I’ve heard none blare yet as the 7:30 a.m. hour approaches. Today’s the closest we as Americans come to a national no-jerk zone for the simple yet powerful reason to realize all we have — and how damn lucky we are. In addition to the private thanks I’ll give to loved ones in the next 24 hours, I also want to share publicly my cycling thanks this year for:
- Twitter for bringing communities together across barriers of geography, culture and language
- Clean roads and tall trees in Bend, Oregon
- The “hill country” of west Texas outside Austin and what it represents in the fight against cancer
- South Grade Road and the AToC 09 KOM summit on the front face of Palomar Mountain
- Big Creek Road and its 20-percent grade that brings grown men to their knees
- Epic MTB territory in Utah
- The Santa Monica Mountains
- Solvang, California
- Moots and Specialized
- The San Diego Low-Speed Wind Tunnel, a famous cyclist and a Sharpie pen
Gracias, danke, merci, grazie, thanks.

- Nate Harrison Grade: A+ We did it on a lark. The night before, the decision was made: Nate Harrison Grade. Yes, let’s ride it. 8 a.m. I’m convinced this is how the most enjoyable exploration happens on a bike. The unpaved ascent of Palomar Mountain from the southwest side serves up everything to test...
- Bicycles in the mist June gloom. It’s the mix of heavy fog and clouds that hug the San Diego coastline with a grayness, dampness and surprising coolness. June gloom, my cycling friends, is not what you expect to find at elevation on your beloved mountain. And yet, there it was, all over Palomar Mountain,...

- The road to satisfaction When you pedal in wet and cold conditions and refuse to surrender, there’s a quiet satisfaction. Saturday was one of those rare days in San Diego.
