Happy birthday

by jeffbean on June 11, 2010

BikeCrave turned 1 today. I feel like the father I was a few years back, caring for a toddlers, heating bottles and changing diapers. Except I’m not. I’m only writing periodically at a desk upon which sits a computer connected to the “Interwebs.” Funny how this works. We can be connected on the road, rolling on two wheels — or through touch screens, keyboards, fiber-optic cable and PHP code. Mobile phones catalog epic rides, while 140-character posts deliver a stream of consciousness. Immediacy can easily overwhelm reflection, meaning and purpose. It’s a balance. I marvel at the world my children are inheriting. And I keep pedaling, thinking and writing. Thanks for coming by. Here’s a small look back at the past year as I prepare for C2K and what awaits over the next mountain:

  • 223 posts
  • Visitors from 88 countries
  • Top 10: US, Canada, UK, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland
  • Top post: Open Letter to Floyd Landis
  • My favorite search keywords: “How to wear a cycling cap”
  • Biggest surprise: That I could share opinions
  • Simple request: That you take time to think about charity, even starting small with a Penny per Mile.

  1. Chocolate dipped track bike It’s not often you see any bike in this hue. Given the introduction at the Tour de France of a new AG2R Mondiale kit, complete with brown bibs, helmet and jersey accents, I couldn’t resist posting this. 2. Why we ride Believe it or not, we’re coming up on the first birthday of BikeCrave. June 8 was the official first blog post, to be exact. Writing and musing about cycling in all forms has been a blast. I must admit, half the battle is coming up with something worthy of sticking...
  3. Off season Now that daylight savings time is ready to roll back the sunlight an hour, we can officially dig into mashed potatoes, gravy and pumpkin pie without guilt, right? Yes and no. My plan is this: semi-hibernate, read some Carver, Cheever, DFW — and catalog stream-of-consciousness thoughts captured during winter rides....
  4. Two-wheeled manifesto I’ve always liked the Cluetrain Manifesto. There’s something pure about taking a fearless stand that’s good for the soul. Really stick it out there. No flinching. No need to explain. Challenge status quo. Straight-on. Be a contrarian with a purpose. Communicate with deep conviction. I’ve been dreaming of a two-wheeled...
  5. Following through Next week I’m scheduled to be in Austin, Texas. Can”t wait. It’s been 5 long years since I did the “Ride for the Roses” with my wife and best friend Therese. She’s a cancer survivor (thyroid), adventure-seeker and doer of things memorable. She first encouraged me in 2003 to get...

Loving the Bike June 11, 2010 at 09:02

Congratulations of one great year. I started following you in January and your site soon became one of my favorites. I’m looking forward to watching you continue to grow.

The balance of cycling, family, life, and blogging is sometimes a struggle…but it’s also so very rewarding. It’s not easy putting out great posts on a regular basis, and I tip my hat to you for continuously doing so.

It hardly seems possible that BikeCrave is only a year old. It feels like it’s been one of the ‘must read’ cycling blogs forever.

Congratulations on building such a great site and for creating a space where we can share our love of cycling. I’m looking forward to many more years of BikeCrave.

Happy birthday, Bike Crave. I hope I can blog about another ride this year.

I love the candidness of your posts; keep it up!

Rodney, kind thanks for taking the time to write from the Land Down Under. So nice to reaffirm that connections can be made through love of cycling. I hope to always find a voice that mirrors that of others.
