I think so

With the most famous American cyclist riding Tour of the Gila in New Mexico, the question’s inevitable. It won’t be the last time, either. The fan, off camera, casually pops it: “So, you’re ready for the Tour de France?” Lance Armstrong, signing autographs, looks up with a smile and gives a three-word answer: “I think so.”

I think so. We know so. Or at a minimum, he will know so very soon. Finishing on the third step of the winner’s podium in Paris, France last year, has possibly mellowed the owner of Mellow Johnny’s. At least what the public is sees. Off camera, the fire must be burning white hot. But the “The Boss” is learning how to keep his cards closer to the chest now that he’s a year older and wiser. I can’t imagine Lance not thinking he won’t be in yellow on the triumphant stage that finishes with circuits on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. But then again, maybe, just maybe, he’s ready to redirect his passion and energy to help bring a teammate to overall victory at Le Tour. You think? Hmm. Nah. Probably not yet. Maybe next year. If I were a betting cyclist, I’d put money on Lance doing everything in his power to time his form to the mico second come July. He wants to go out a winner. And I don’t blame him. I would, too.

  1. Good sport I’m not sure about you, but Lance Armstrong’s body language the past few days isn’t telling me that he knows how to bow out gracefully. Last year, the internal strife with Alberto Contador generated buzz and left a little tarnish. This year, after numerous falls and a less-than-stellar showing (absent...
  2. Made in France If you’re like me, you’ve been geeking out pretty hard on the Tour de France and the Lance-Alberto-Astana saga. Hey, Americans tend to root for the home team. It’s a matter of national pride. So check this out: While Phil and Paul go absolutely ballistic calling the Tour on Versus...
  3. Thanks Lance 2.0 A year ago, I wrote a post immediately after the end of the 2009 Tour de France to thank Lance Armstrong for coming back to the pro peloton. This year, he didn’t podium. Controversy now surrounds him much like it did Barry Bonds a few years back with federal authorities...
  4. The People’s Ride Yesterday about 5,000 people on bikes rode with Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Robbie McEwen and other pros in Adelaide, Australia. The “ride” was announced a day or two in advance. Much like one in Ireland last year, the ride symbolized solidarity. A positive call to action. Say what you want...
  5. What cyclists think about in November If you ride a bike, you can relate. It’s that time of the year when we start thinking. Thoughts we didn’t have a few months ago. Pondering. Odd soul searching. Thinking about the obtuse. The minutiae. Personal things most people don’t think about. Be honest and tell me your thoughts...
