Rain outside means no ride. Pavement is soaked. Puddles are forming and re-forming. Sunday looks no better. I’m doing a short keyboard session. Indoors, fueled by coffee, cookies and whatever else gets in my path. Channeling an inner hunger for a good ride and scenery. Saving up. Some days are like that. What you crave and what you get may not go as planned. We make due.
Yes, I’d rather be outside, despite the rain, gray skies and holiday shopping traffic. But no need risking life and limb — not to mention exposing both freshly tuned machines to the grit of the San Diego roadways. Last night, sirens were a reminder of the risks. An SUV flipped near the house at high speed. Completely on its top. This morning, I see the smashed guardrail. Thankfully no one perished. Some days are like that. One minute you’re in control, protected by two tons of steel. The next minute, everything is upside down, hardly as planned. We make due.
The garage is starting to look attractive. Even with all its clutter, disorganization and a crying need for spring cleaning. It’s dry. It’s safe. It has a stationary trainer beneath the rubble somewhere. Staying in one place to ride a bike takes something only the strongest have. The mental stamina to exact pain on oneself. To know that there is no point A to point B. Just a point to the process. The payoff comes in March and lasts through August, September and maybe even October. Paying dues. Some days are like that. You tell yourself why. For many, this is the plan. We make due.

- No bad days When you think the world is going to you-know-what-in-a-handcart. When things seem dark. When negative thoughts fill your head, try to think of the positive. On a rides over 100 miles and 10,000 feet of climbing, it’s hilarious moments at which you realize how insignificant all the “noise” we perceive to be...
- 30 days of biking Howdy. I wrote a guest post today for a cool idea out of MPLS called “30 Days of Biking.” The goal? Just as you would imagine: Encourage people to ride a bike every day, for the next 30 days. For some, the challenge offers the opportunity to shed old habits...
- Turning point You know the moment when things are turning in the right direction. The turning point. It’s when you ride within yourself. No longer do you obscenely go over your limit or flirt with an epic bonk. You stay within the rivet, and occasionally on the rivet. You know, “in difficulty.” But...
- Bike friends Bike friends. They’re invaluable. You may not always realize it. But without them, you’re a single rider, exposed to the elements and all the road can bring, both good and bad. Bike friends can make a ride at least twice as good as you thought possible — no matter the route...
- Wendy’s single and a side order of hallucination Matt Longson is my hero. Straight up. The man completed the Hoodoo 500 last weekend. In under 48 hours (official race cutoff), he pedaled 519 miles, climbed 30,000 feet and endured 30+ mph winds. He stayed on the bike when he didn’t want to. He rode when most (and many)...
