Rolling caffeine

by jeffbean on July 5, 2009

Southern California isn’t Europe. We like to spread things out here. Suburbs are the rule, not the exception. Which is why this photograph so attracted me. I wonder if the people who order coffee from Dickinson’s Coffee Shop in London enjoy bikes as much as me, as much as us, as much as anyone who rides. Every once in a while, hot coffee (and food) delivered right to your front door must be a treat. Sundays are for sleeping in, reading the newspaper, and sipping java. It’s why rolling caffeine is the Sunday Crave. Photo courtesy of Ouendi. Hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday wherever the road or trail leads.

  2. Phraseology 101 I had an “epic ride” this week in which I encountered a ”distracted driver” and got so angry I nearly called him a ”douche.” What’s wrong with this sentence? On its face, it’s hard to judge. But in the ever-colorful and changing parlance of cycling-speak, it can serve as Exhibit A of how words and phrases...
  3. Before the ride Ever have a day when you didn’t want to ride, but got out there anyway? Those usually turn out to be among the best on the bike. I can’t explain it. Expectations are dialed back. 4. Winter Who invented February? I mean, come on. Across much of the globe, the month produces a dread that tests cyclists’ yearning for spring, for summer, for warmth, clear roads, and riding under the sun. I can sense the growing angst in this month’s flow of tweets about plunging air temps,...
  5. Road trip I like to ride “door-to-door.” Prefer leaving home solo on the bike and finishing at home. Simple. No car to load, no directions to check and no wet garments to shed for the post-ride drive. Zero packing. Just two bottles, a wallet, phone and music. If you have good routes near...

Another stunning bike photo. I must have bike ism. I have a guilty time taking the day off the bike when I’m not working, but I tend to get tired from working my ass off and on my feet 12 hours a day during the work days. I guess it is part of the art of peaking. The Joe Martin for the Pros goes up Mount Nemo in Arkansas, and the there is a time trial there in September. I think I would at least like to see it, ride it by myself to say I did it. It takes away the mystery and hype when I can see it, ride it with by my own efforts. I did the Joe Martin route backwards three weeks ago and it was actually harder than the regular way. I had to do it for myself, to say I did it. Got caught in the rain Saturday, the 4th, and it felt so invigorating. It made me feel like a Roluer rider or like some of the hard tour pictures I’ve seen. Bike Crave for sure.

I’ll tip a teeny tiny espresso cup to that.
