The best

The best. This superlative gets tossed about plenty. Best EVER! Best performance. Best movie. Best book. Best blog. Or how about this one? Best man.

When riding a bike, best has moments of glory. Tonight, I experienced a few bests. Perhaps you’ll see some of your best cycling experiences in these as well. The best hill is the one you just crested. The best water is the cold bottle or glass you down pro-style after the ride is over and sweat pours out of your head. The best road is the one before you that invites you to go farther. The best shift is the one so easy, you didn’t feel a thing. The best bike is a no-brainer. It’s the one you’re riding. The best ride? The one just completed.

Every ride gives you something to remember, to cherish, to savor. Tomorrow’s another day, a chance to bring out some of your best. Do it in all facets of your life, including the bike, no matter where. No matter when.

  1. Turning point You know the moment when things are turning in the right direction. The turning point. It’s when you ride within yourself. No longer do you obscenely go over your limit or flirt with an epic bonk. You stay within the rivet, and occasionally on the rivet. You know, “in difficulty.” But...
  2. Two-wheeled manifesto I’ve always liked the Cluetrain Manifesto. There’s something pure about taking a fearless stand that’s good for the soul. Really stick it out there. No flinching. No need to explain. Challenge status quo. Straight-on. Be a contrarian with a purpose. Communicate with deep conviction. I’ve been dreaming of a two-wheeled...
  3. The hangover Because you have to reach a few lows to appreciate the highs, I’m experiencing a cycling hangover this week. No, I didn’t party or overdo the mileage during the Tour of California. The pain stems from this combo: not enough riding and too much man-made stress. That’s life for many...
  4. The elixir Riding during the work week is the perfect elixir for anything. Too many emails? Projects piling up? Huge creative block? Get out and ride. Stomach acid? Headache? Bad posture? Go for a ride. Florescent light giving you a grayish glow? Copy machine busted? Coffee tastes like dirt? Better get out there. Just...
  5. Falling for fall As a native son of San Diego, I admit we’re blessed with weather here. Yes, we also may be a little less “hearty” because we don’t have to rake piles of leaves or shovel snow. But we still have seasons. I swear. Really. Trust me. Some of the leaves will...

Very well put. Cycling simply is “The Best”.

Everytime I read one of your posts I say to myself: “this one’s the best!”
So many images in your writing; poetry to my ears.

I’ve been thinking lately about biking as a metaphor for learning and change. Your post is a great help in exploring this… really enjoyed it.

Every night I put the kid to sleep I ask him, “what was the best part of your day?” The responses are everywhere, but interesting. I like to think this sends him off to sleep thinking about the good things as opposed to the name calling at daycare or the girl who punched him in the face.

The best is yet to come.
