Four years ago, Lance Armstrong was in the midst of “Comeback 2.0” and doing what only Lance could do: be a lightning rod in the sport of pro cycling for fans pro Lance and con Lance. It was February—before America’s Greatest Race moved to May and directly in competition for our attention with the Giro d’Italia. We watched atop Palomar Mountain at the KOM where South Grade Road meets East Grade Road. The peloton came through fast and efficiently. Snow had fallen less than a week earlier, but fans mobbed the summit to be part of what makes cycling so accessible—the ability to be within inches of the athletes who battle the the elements and each other.
