Bikes that go left very fast. Those would be track bikes. And this one below called Speed Metal is made by Winter Bicycles. It was supposed to be here in San Diego in April at the handbuilt bike show but alas couldn’t make the trip. These pictures tell the story. Eric Estlund’s commercial website for Winter Bicycles contains links and a photo gallery with more of his solid work. He also keeps a flickr account of bike builds in progress here. I have a special place in my heart for Eugene, Oregon, since it’s a few-hours drive due west of Bend, Oregon, over the Cascade Mountains. Back in the day when I first started riding road bikes I dreamed of reporting and writing for the Eugene Register Guard newspaper. There’s serious bike mojo in Eugene. Time to spread it from my home base in San Diego. Winter in summer is what I crave today. How about you?

- Artist at work Anyone who’s been to this website from the get-go knows I have high regard for Winter Bicycles. I’ve never met Eric Estlund, the man behind the bike company. But some day, yes, I definitely must. He’s building bikes up in Eugene, Oregon, just a few hours west of Bend, where...
- experiMENTAL Whip Sometimes you see something that makes you stop everything you’re doing. You take a closer look. You examine the curves. You marvel at the engineering. - A bike with your name Today I wish I had a different first name. Something like…“Guido.” If I did, I’d buy this vintage bike, learn French and strike up a conversation with the lovely folks at my local bakery. Guido has a certain toughness to it. This bike is a freak show of welding beauty!!!
Oh my, this bike makes my heart skip a beat. Amazing. Thanks for profiling such a gorgeous trackie!
And the colors are pretty neat, too
Hi Ingrid, when I saw it, I was quite literally stunned. Eric’s a very nice guy, too, and he has great elan. I had to share the work. No option but. Thanks for checking out BikeCrave.
I may have been the one that suggested the soundtrack for this bike… I’m also the lucky owner of one of Eric’s cyclocross frames. One of the things I love about his bikes, though, is the combination of form and function…. they ride great and look beautiful.
Andrew
Andrew, soundtrack? Wow. Be curious to know what “Speed Metal” includes. If you have some pics of your Winter cyclocross bike would love to see. bikecrave(at)gmail.com. Thanks.
Jeff: Eric called me and said he was looking to do a photomontage/slideshow thing that he needed to find 10secs of the most-full-on ‘speed metal’ for… and I was his go-to ‘speed metal guy.’ Syncing pictures and music turned out to be too difficult and probably had some legitimate copyright issues involved. In any case, Eric has a blog entry from April 28th with a nice YouTube clip of Testament doing ‘Legions of the Dead,’ featuring the incomparable Dave Lombardo on drums. There was also an iMix I made for Eric with all his options on it… not sure if you can still find it through iTunes, but it’s called ‘Winter Bicycles.’
Eric built the bike under my nose, so to speak, and all the frame-build pics can be found on his Flickr page… it is the TB Cyclocross album.
best

Andrew, great connection. Go-to “speed-metal guy.” Great bike. It’s been viewed pretty heavily. I will need to check out the YouTube clip from Eric and other pics. Thanks for the comment and for swinging by BikeCrave. If you come across a bike that you crave that needs to be featured here, please holler. I’m happy to crave with you.
