Tip of the cap

by jeffbean on April 21, 2010

So it was like Christmas here today in San Diego. Hailed first thing this morning. House sounded like a tin shed in the desert. Rained sideways, too. Snowed on Palomar Mountain by early afternoon. For real. I couldn’t believe it. All this unusual weather, my goodness. Amazing. Then a package hit the front doorstep, safe from the wild elements and ready to please: samples of BikeCrave cycling caps with custom embroidered logo. Upon seeing these, I immediately felt warm, fuzzy and 20 years younger. Who knew? The fountain of youth doesn’t come in a bottle. No, you can wear it on your head. Which I am. Right now.

If there are sufficient global cravings (and demand), I’ll place a stocking order and post up a small storefront for BikeCrave blog visitors. I have no firm plans, but I must say this: The hats are incredibly better than I thought they could ever be. Here’s what I mean. Handmade is very special. No cardboard in the bill to get brittle and drive you nuts. And made in the USA, which still means something to me. The makers being right in my hometown region of San Diego? Well, that closed the deal. The great folks at Walz Caps in Vista, California, and I are partners. We first exchanged tweets when I was gallivanting around Washington D.C. on a rented bike last summer, taking photos of monuments. I whole-heartedly recommend Walz Cycling Caps to any bike shops, clubs or cycling aficionados looking to do caps right. Check out Walz. They are the real thing. I’ve worn many a mass-produced cycling cap. Never again, my friends. In the meantime, if you can, please let me know your preference on BikeCrave cap colorways (I used that word because I know how much BikeSnob loves it). You can DM me on Twitter or pop a comment in the box below. Because BikeCrave is small, we have to keep our inventory levels sane. I hope your training is going well. It’s almost May. That means the snow on Palomar Mountain tonight will likely be the last until early winter. I do believe that deserves a tip of the cap.

  2. Off season Now that daylight savings time is ready to roll back the sunlight an hour, we can officially dig into mashed potatoes, gravy and pumpkin pie without guilt, right? Yes and no. 4. The road to satisfaction When you pedal in wet and cold conditions and refuse to surrender, there’s a quiet satisfaction. Saturday was one of those rare days in San Diego. The forecast was catastrophic by local standards. Precisely what was needed for a Palomar Mountain group ride planned weeks ago. The official 70% to...
  5. Less is more Ran the numbers tonight. Not bad. YTD mileage is nearly identical to 2009 — a tad under 3,000 miles, or closing in on 5,000 kilometers (counting missed mileage from Mt. Hey Jeff — really like the black w/white “racing” stripe. Would live to pick one up if possible. Let me know when/if they become available.

Cheers,
Jason

Very cool. I had considered ordering one of their caps before so it’s good to know the quality is good. For under the helmet I’d have to go with the white w/black stripe.

sah weet….They’re all pretty nice. Think I agree with Bryan though, the white is da bomb.

Thanks for the early feedback. I received several DMs as well, and will be placing stocking order for two flavors: black with white stripe, and vice versa. Stay tuned!
