If you’re old enough, you remember when there were three choices (1) Power Bar (2) bananas (3) home-made cookies

Today, who can keep track? I’m a bit lax on embracing the “latest” nutrition technology. But my favs are basic, based on trial-and-error.

  1. Hammer Nutrition Perpetuem or Sustained Energy for century rides or longer, and big days in the mountain. Zero GI distress, no sugar peaks, no sugar valleys. Bland taste doesn’t bug me in the least. A bottle an hour is the drill. Pack away some powder in a baggie and stuff in your jersey pockets. All you need is water.
  2. Cafe latte, 20-ounce with extra shot. Bevy of choice if available in the morning. Typically on coastal recovery rides.
  3. Coke, de-fizzed. Or Mountain Dew, de-fizzed. Usually  near the end of grueling summer day in saddle. You know, looking for the sugar spike.
  4. Oatmeal, instant kind from Trader Joe’s. Two packets for breakfast before any ride over 50 miles.
  5. Spaghetti with plain marinara sauce. Favorite pre-ride dinner. No wine.
  6. Water. The basis of life.

Chris Horner of Team Astana has been known to enjoy a Double Double. I too, support this dietary movement. Some day, I’m going to ride a fixie into the resturant’s drive-thru line and make a real statement.

GREAT SITE!

For a post ride meal I would say that a Chipotle chicken burrito with black beans covered in green tabasco sauce is close to perfection. I have been known to plan a rides start-finish point based solely on the proximity to a Chipotle.

Hi Bernie, Very nice to see all caps in your voice, especially since you’re from SoCal where we’re all laid back :) I know you’re not yelling. I sense excitement. A Chipotle chicken burrito as described is now entered into my Evernote list of to-dos. Hope to connect with you this summer on rides in North County. Some beautiful roads and places. Man, are we lucky.
