If you ride a bike, you can relate. It’s that time of the year when we start thinking. Thoughts we didn’t have a few months ago. Pondering. Odd soul searching. Thinking about the obtuse. The minutiae. Personal things most people don’t think about. Be honest and tell me your thoughts haven’t wandered off to include a few of these:
- If I grow my leg hair out, I’ll be warmer (even if I don’t ride outside during winter).
- I deserve to eat half a pumpkin pie because, dammit, I rode more this year than last.
- Embrocation might do wonders for my freshly shaved head early in the morning.
- I need new bibs. I really do. It’s time. I’m ready.
- I’m afraid to ask my LBS about the over-the-top marketing-speak on bib pads by brand.
- I need a new saddle fitting program. This is the year. I will do it. No more soreness.
- I’m afraid to ask my LBS about saddles, chamois cream — or get feedback on my arse.
- $250 isn’t too much for a pair of cycling glasses. It’s eye protection.
- I’m going to weigh my meal portions. Just like Lance. 3% body fat.
- It’s OK to watch the 2003 Tour de France DVD for the 40th time. I love Jan Ullrich.
I hope you’re having a good off-season, cross season, or MTB fun on the trails. If you’re lucky like me, you’re still riding road and not tiring of any vehicular obstacles, close-calls or changing weather. If you want to add anything to the list of things we think in November, pop it into the comments box. I’m sure others would enjoy knowing. Ciao for now.

- Fear is a funny thing Are you afraid? Why? Start living. Pursue dreams. Don’t make excuses. If you fail, get up. Try again. Do better. Be smarter next time. - The art of shaving OK, since I broached the topic of what may constitute a “serious cyclist,” I’ve received a surge of adrenaline to write about more things personal and unique to our cycling culture. A nasty day-long sideways rainstorm doesn’t hurt the cause, either. Tonight’s topic is sensitive. Revealing. I’m wincing even as...
- The People’s Ride Yesterday about 5,000 people on bikes rode with Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Robbie McEwen and other pros in Adelaide, Australia. The “ride” was announced a day or two in advance. Much like one in Ireland last year, the ride symbolized solidarity. A positive call to action. Say what you want...
- The human race Today’s official. For the next few months, we no longer “save” daylight in what has been a great cycling year. For some, things transition to the indoor trainer or spin class. For others, saddle time will be limited to weekends and holidays away from the office, quarterly earnings and EBITDA....
- Peaking If you dig climbs (who doesn’t have a favorite?), this is the time of year when you should start to actually enjoy the suffering. Skeptics may claim that “suffering” can’t be enjoyable, but cyclists (and other endurance-driven athletes) understand truth and paradox. Suffering happens when it’s early season and your...

I’m thinking about lights on my bike, warm clothing for the winter, I’ll be cycling all winter long. On the “old” bike that is. Freezing on a bike can be fun
I need new shorts too. I’m pretty sure I need Titanium…. need? I’ll think of some excuse, oh, it’s November!
harm job, lights and warm clothes are a must in Europe. Chapeau to you for riding all winter long!
Rickie, no excuses needed for titanium. It’s a requirement.
